When Chi Mei first meets Jiang Yang after being captured, he is drawn to her kind and gentle nature, which stands out in contrast to the cruelty of the other humans. Chi Mei starts to fall in love with her, believing she returns his feelings.
Even when someone tries to undermine Jiang Yang, telling Chi Mei that Jiang Yang is just playing with him, Chi Mei refuses to believe it. His faith in Jiang Yang’s love remains unshakable. When his brother Fu Yue comes up, who was abandoned by his human lover (later revealed to be Jiang Yang’s sister), Chi Mei passionately defends Jiang Yang, certain that unlike that “bad woman”, Jiang Yang would never betray him.
Chi Mei’s love grows to the point where he decides to defy his clan and abandon his life in the sea to be with Jiang Yang. When they reunite on the island after his escape, and Jiang Yang tells Chi Mei she is willing to marry him, Chi Mei is overjoyed. He eagerly looks forward to their wedding and dreams of having children with her. His devotion is such that even when Jiang Yang suddenly leaves the island, Chi Mei refuses to believe she has abandoned him, stubbornly clinging to faith in her love against all evidence.
Later, when Chi Mei discovers Jiang Yang has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs. Even Chun Jian’s bitter warnings cannot dissuade him. For Chi Mei, a life without Jiang Yang is not worth living.
After finding Jiang Yang, Chi Mei’s love remains steadfast despite the obstacles they face. He supports Jiang Yang as she takes on new responsibilities, and when he becomes pregnant with their child, Chi Mei is blissfully happy…
